"YOU HAVE ALL THE REASONS TO BE ANGRY"

The article looks at social, political, and economic conditions in South Africa as of 2013. It recounts the 2012 shooting of striking miners by police in the Marikana area, noting that the wildcat strikers' anger was primarily aimed at black union and government officials, not at whites. It discusses the history of the country's mining industry and of labor activism by miners, which it says was closely linked to the fight against apartheid. It profiles Cyril Ramaphosa, one-time National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) head and an African National Congress (ANC) leader who became a wealthy businessman. It says economic inequality has increased in the post-apartheid era. Julius Malema of the ANC Youth League and South African President Jacob Zuma are discussed.
